The Leaderboard

The Leaderboard is a series-long point system to help athletes chart their progress and incentivize a season of racing. Points will be accumulated this year during our Waukee, Des Moines, Valley View, Omaha and Johnston races for all athletes. We will drop the athletes lowest regular season points from the final score.

While we love our Johnston Championship race and feel that it is extra important for athletes to support the championship as we cheer them onto the last finish line of the summer, we understand that not all athletes are able to make it to this event, and sometimes, even though an athlete makes it to the race, a mechanical or medical issue prevents an athlete from having the race that they trained for.

For that reason, in 2026, our Johnston Championship event will still weigh more heavily for Leaderboard points, but if an athlete has raced in all 4 previous events, and if Johnston is their lowest score, the other 4 race scores will be used for the Overall Leaderboard.

This leaderboard will be updated after each race to reflect the “regular season,” showing the athletes’ placements from the series thus far.

After our Johnston Championship event, following the race awards, we will recognize the top 5 Leaderboard athletes in each category and gender.

Rules For Earning Points:

  1. Points are given based on place within age and gender at each event.

  2. Athletes winning their division at a "regular season" event will receive 100 points.

  3. During the "regular season" each place behind first will receive 4 fewer points (2nd-96, 3rd-92, etc).

  4. Athletes who compete in any event are guaranteed a minimum of 50 points for finishing.

  5. The championships race will be worth a total of 125 points for the winner of each division.

  6. At the championships, each place behind first will receive 5 fewer point (2nd-120, 3rd-115, etc).

  7. After the championships we will give an award to the top five athletes from each age and gender.

  8. Athletes top 4 scores will be totaled together to get the leaderboard score.

  9. Legends division athletes are not eligible for Leaderboard points.

  10. Any athlete who goes undefeated at all 5 RipRoar regional events and The Championships will be recognized.

  11. For any athletes (ages 13-15) choosing to race in the Flatlands Cup Triathlon rather than Valley View (which is the same weekend), these athletes will still be eligible for Leaderboard points as they can use their points scored in the other 4 races (Waukee, Des Moines, Omaha and Johnston).
